Dr. Grutter is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in Shoulder and Elbow surgery from Johns Hopkins and subspecialty certification in Sports Medicine. He is committed to excellence in orthopaedic surgery and highly skilled in sports medicine, shoulder surgery, elbow surgery, knee surgery and fracture care.
Dr. Grutter is uniquely qualified to provide excellence in orthopaedic care. He trained at Johns Hopkins, one of the most respected institutions in medicine and ranked the number one hospital by U.S. News & World Report for the past 19 years and running. Dr. Grutter was one of the first orthopaedic surgeons in the country to obtain subspecialty certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Grutter attended Truman State University on a Football scholarship. His college teams went to the NCAA Division II playoffs two out of the four years he played. He was the team captain of the 1994 team which finished ranked 9th in the nation in NCAA Division II football. He was a 1st team MIAA All-Conference inside linebacker and a NCAA Division II All-American. He graduated Cum Laude from Truman State with a B.S. in Chemistry and minor in Biology.
Dr. Grutter graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. After medical school Dr. Grutter excelled in a five year orthopaedic surgery residency at the Detroit Medical Center / Wayne State University. During residency he was active in orthopaedic research and was awarded the Resident//Fellows Award at the annual meeting of the American Association for Hand Surgery in Kaui, Hawai. He was also honored with the 2004 Wayne State University Research Award for his reseach in hand and shoulder disorders.
After completing his residency, Dr. Grutter served in the United States Air Force practicing Orthopaedic Surgery at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia. He also served with the US Army in Afghanistan during Operating Enduring Freedom. Dr. Grutter's military service provided extensive experience in the care of difficult orthopaedic cases and trauma surgery. Dr. Grutter recieved numerus decorations during his military service, including: the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement and meritorious service during Operation Enduring Freedom, Forward Operating Base – Salerno, Afghanistan, Air Force Commendation Medal for outstanding achievement and meritorious service to the United States Air Force, NATO Medal for service in relation to ISAF Operation, Air Force Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Star in recognition of service in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Army Combat Action Badge in recognition of Soldiers personally engaged by the enemy, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and was a member of the Honor Flight - USAF Officer Training School.
Dr. Grutter performs procedures from the common rotator cuff repair to complex revision total shoulder replacements and revision ACL reconstructions using arthroscopic or minimally invasive techniques, providing the shortest recovery times and best possible outcomes. He continues to be active in research on Shoulder surgery with publications in the American Journal of Sports Medicine in 2010 and two publications in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery in 2011.
After completing ten years of post-graduate medical education and four years of military service, Dr. Grutter was drawn to the Nashville area primarily due to its strong family values. He resides in Gallatin, TN with his wife Tracy and their two boys. In his free time he enjoys playing with his children, working on his antique Jeep, which he has had since he was 16 years old, and making furniture. Dr. Grutter is also an avid water and snow skier.
